A Word from Dian Marie Bridge
Artistic Director
“As Black Theatre Workshop enters its 54th season, we are excited to welcome actors, designers, and production teams to bring our 2024-25 season to life. This year, we proudly present a Season of Black Women Writers and Directors, with our MainStage offering, Vierge by Rachel Mutombo, and TYA show, Taking Care of Maman by Djennie Laguerre, directed by myself and Lydie Dubuisson.
Reflecting on this season’s planning, I am inspired by the notion that Black stories and dreams exist independently of mainstream narratives. Our commitment is to center Black voices that have been historically marginalized, to foster creativity through initiatives like Club Zed, and to continue supporting artists through AMP, our Artist Mentorship Program.
This season celebrates the relationships that define us, as we uplift and empower Black voices and narratives. As Canada’s oldest Black theatre company, we aim to redefine the narrative beyond trauma or otherness, exploring how our communities and identities shape our future. We want to highlight the richness of Black life as a diverse spectrum of experiences that inform and enrich our understanding of the world.
I am excited about the possibilities this season holds and look forward to sharing these powerful stories with our audiences.
This season is an invitation to explore, connect, and dream together.”
