A Word from Dian Marie Bridge
Artistic Director
“TALLAWAH” is my word for the 2025/26 season! It is Jamaican patois for “strength or resiliency” and is a fitting illustration of BTW, as we are ushered into our 55th season, as one of Canada’s longest running theatre companies. Period. Anyone who sees BTW as a home base, as stewards of story, or who have launched careers with us knows that “tallawah” is our gift to community and is at the foundation of all our relationships.
This season BTW continues our commitment to a national training strategy that is industry-responsive, and productions with Canadian perspectives that speak authentically to the lived experiences of Black people around the globe.
This season’s productions focus on a theme of navigating and staying ahead of systems, people and authorities that cause characters to hide, be silent, lie and even flirt with criminality. The strength of community, and our responsibility to each other, comes into question, when survival means that the lines between right and wrong is ever shifting, depending on who you are talking to. Small choices have big consequences, and resiliency is mandatory. In a phrase “dem little but dem tallawah”!
